Chinese Dialects

My first post after a few months, and I'm back just to blab about Chinese dialects in American TV shows. I'll blab about dramas during the summer when I have time to catch up on them. But I was recently watching Nikita on CW when I noticed how they would switch between Cantonese and Mandarin. The dude was talking to his men in Mandarin, and then in the next scene he's speaking in Canto. What's worse, all the people who spoke Chinese, in either dialect, had such a strong accent, no one would believe that they were from China. For instance, take the agent who pretended to be a local security guard. He was able to trick a roomful of scientists while using the lousiest Mandarin ever. I think this is a good reason for the entertainment industry in America to hire more Asians. They shouldn't be a minority in the industry anymore, since more and more movies and shows seem to have scenes that take place in the blooming Asia.

I'm not hating on Nikita(I love it too much for that). It has happened on other shows, and it gets to the point that it's annoying like hell. I know that people who don't know Chinese wouldn't be bothered by it, just like how I can never know if the Russian or French or any other language is correctly portrayed, but it still irks me that they don't even bother to differentiate between dialects.

So, tell me what you think about this, and I'll see you guys next time. PENGUIN WAVES BYES~

Catching Up

Yikes. It's been a while since I've been here. School drained all my energy and it took me 2 weeks of my break to recover. So, WELCOME TO 2013! May the new year bring happiness and prosperity!

Since I don't have many New Year resolutions, I'm just going to go over events in the last months of 2012 that I wanted to blab about but didn't have a chance to.

October
The only memorable part of October for me, I think, was Halloween. Everyone was busy with their projects at school, but most of us brought candy in to share. I probably stole more than I shared. Look, I even dressed up my penguin! (I dressed up as a werewolf, but because it wasn't a full moon that day...hehe ^-^)

November
Nothing much happened. Didn't celebrate Thanksgiving, nor did I get anything during Black Friday. But I did watch Wreck-It Ralph. It's an okay movie, but wasn't worth my money. Best part was when you see all the "bad" characters of the games and try to name them all.

December
My dreaded final was due. A design of a library in Hayes Valley of San Francisco. Since it was due a week before my other finals, it was actually quite worry free. In the end, I got lazier and lazier. My drawings weren't as good as they were during the mid-review, and my model was half finished and looked like crap. The only good thing is the 3D rendering, which I'll share with you guys.
When seen from 5 ft away, it actually looks real :)
There was also the TVB awards in December. If I remember correctly, it was a lot later than previous years. As for the winners, most of them were deserving. Mandy Wong was the only strong contender in the Most Improved, and I loved how she thanked her "hubby" Oscar Leung and "cousin" Chin Ka Lok. As for Wayne Lai, he's a good actor, but not that great that he could win Best Actor 3 times in the last 5 years. It's not Wayne's fault, TVB just has crappy actors. Can't wait for the new generation like Oscar Leung, Benjamin Yuen, and Vincent Wong to take over. I was quite sad that Charmaine Sheh didn't win Best Actress for her role in When Heaven Burns. But I guess WHB winning Best Drama makes up for it. It really was the best drama, it had a good story(something TVB really lacks nowadays), a wonderful cast of actors and actresses, and awesome theme songs.

And that wraps the most memorable parts of the last few months of 2012. It was such a great year, as great as the years before.

Sad Penguin

School sucks. It sucks so freaking much. Why did I choose a major where you are expected to spend at least 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, working on project after project? WHERE IS ALL MY SLEEP TIME?! WHERE IS ALL MY FREE TIME?! I need my dramas(and sleep)! But yea, I guess I won't be able to write the review for Divas in Distress. Not only do I not have the time write it, I have yet to find time to finish DID. I think I'm going to change majors....

Until next time, which would probably be around Thanksgiving, PENGUIN WAVES BYE!

Hug? No Hug? OF COURSE HUG!

School has started, and I can barely keep up with it. It's quite sad that I don't have time to watch Divas in Distress. I'm so busy that I'm writing this while working on my models. Make one cut, type one sentence

I've been skimming through the recent episodes. The one scene that stands out the most/most memorable would be when Him hugged Mandy. So cute how he would grab her arms and wrap them around him and she would put them down, and this would go on and on. I was so happy they got together, but they didn't even last 1 episode! Sigh. I'll catch up on all the episodes when I have the time and then gush(hmm, don't think I've ever gushed about anything in my life) about Mandy/Him pairing.
Aww, SO CUTE!
Him Law is reading Harry Potter! Not like his character to read stuff like that. Can't really see it in this pic, but if you enlarge it, you can see the word "Potter" on the top of the left page and "Hagrid" on the top of the right page.

Until next time, PENGUIN WAVES BYE!

Mandy/Him Law in Divas in Distress(巴不得媽媽…)

I thought I would have time to write a review for the first five episodes of Divas in Distress, but it turns out that I don't. Nor will I have time to write any review for the next month. So I am going to write the review on the whole series at the end. I apologize for making a promise that I cannot keep. To make it up to you guys, I painted a (bad) picture of Mandy and Him Law. Using Paint with a mouse is hard....

Until next time, PENGUIN WAVES BYE!

"Other Me" (video diptych)

This is a video I made for class four months ago(you get to see how crappy my art is when it comes to people, haha). It is a diptych, where two art pieces, or in my case videos, are placed side by side. There is some interaction between them, like showing contrasts or similarities. For my video, I made my two "worlds" collide and have the characters in both interact.

Even though this was for my final, I didn't even start working on it until 3 days before it was due. Because of that, the sound and the ending could use some improvement. Anyways, I hope you all enjoy it.

I'll be back this weekend with my review for Divas in Distress. Until then, PENGUIN WAVES BYE!

Divas in Distress(巴不得媽媽…) OTS

Really soothing theme song. I want the full version for my mp3... I think this is the first time I've seen an opening theme that didn't show any scenes from the drama. I don't know if I like that or not. But love Mandy and Him Law in the opening, they look so sweet. Looking forward to their scenes.

I might write a review for the first five episodes this weekend. I'm enjoying the first episode, so I guess it's off to a great start.
